Cantabria overview

Sandwiched between Asturias and Biscay provinces in the northern Basque country region is Cantabria. The hilly province is a lot of fun to explore by car, strewn as it is with pretty landscapes and interesting villages. Cantabria has the busy port and popular tourist spot of Santander as its capital and a bunch of great surfing beaches either side of it. Not far from Santander is medieval Santillana del Mar. Spelunkers can check out the impressive historical Caves of Altamira or, if you have the legs for it, the Picos de Europa National Park lies right down in the southwest of Cantabria and has some of the best trekking in Spain. Santander is the entry point to Cantabria, with an airport and a significant ferry port.
